Patient Commitment

Straight white teeth and a nice smile is the result of good planning and good treatment by your orthodontist, and good co-operation from our patients.

We appreciate your commitment to:

  • Arrive on time for your appointments.
  • Follow our instructions to care for the work we provide.
  • Attend review and maintenance appointments as advised.
  • Pay for treatment as requested. We accept cash, personal and business cheques and most credit and debit cards. We also offer interest free credit and low cost finance.
  • Talk to us, let us know what you think of what we do: right and wrong.
  • Help our practice grow by recommending us to your family, friends and colleagues.

Good co-operation with your braces involves:

Diet control

Once your braces have been placed, you must avoid STICKY FOODS. These include GUM, TOFFEE, CHEWITS and other SWEETS, as this weakens the bond and causes breakages of your brace. Also, avoid BITING into foods as this can cause breakages as well. Cut these foods using a knife (e.g. APPLES, PEARS, and CHICKEN DRUMSTICKS) or break them up with your fingers (e.g. BREAD, SANDWICHES) into small bite size pieces. Avoid very HARD or CRISPY foods altogether (e.g. BRAZIL NUTS, PORK CRACKLING). Do not eat sugary foods between meals and avoid fizzy drinks as much as possible. Broken braces will result in longer treatment time, added expense and may jeopardise the quality of the result.

Cleaning

Oral hygiene is extremely important whilst orthodontic treatment is carried out. Poor standards can lead to areas of decay on the teeth, which will need attention by your general dentist. Once your braces have been placed, you will now need to brush for 6 minutes every morning and every night. Ideally, you should have a travel toothbrush to clean your teeth after meals when you are not at home. Caring for Your Teeth is extremely important. Instructions on proper care will be given and demonstrated once appliances have been placed.

Mouth-rinse

We recommend you use a fluoride mouth rinse every evening if you have fixed appliances, this helps strengthen teeth and protects against acid attack. We stock a highly recommended mouth-rinse at reception for your convenience.

Mouth-guards

It is important that you protect your smile during contact sports, if you do play a contact support please inform your orthodontist so we can discuss which mouth-guards are suitable for you.

Appointments

You must keep all of your appointments and attend on time. If you arrive late there will not be enough time to complete all your treatment, and other patients who have arrived on time will be delayed. Missed appointments will make your treatment take longer. Continuously failed or late cancellation (less than 24hours notice) of appointments may incur a fee to cover costs or may result in treatment being discontinued by us in some cases.

Instructions

It is of Paramount importance that you comply with your orthodontist's advice in particular if you wear headgear or elastics or removable appliances and retainers.  Lack of compliance can compromise your finished result. It may also result in relapse of achieved results, for example, if you do not wear your retainers as instructed. Please do not make assumptions! If you are unsure of anything, please contact us by phone or email to clarify any issues.
