The most common orthodontic problem is called malocclusion, or ‘bad bite’, and can be a genetic problem. A bad bite can also be caused by childhood thumb or finger-sucking, mouth breathing, dental disease, abnormal swallowing, poor dental hygiene, the early or late loss of baby teeth, accidents or poor nutrition. Trauma and other medical conditions such as birth defects may contribute to orthodontic problems as well. Open bite often occurs when some teeth are unable to make physical contact with the opposing teeth for a proper bite.
Deep bite or overbite occurs when the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth.
Gaps between teeth can occur with abnormal continued growth of the jawbone. Missing teeth can also cause the surrounding teeth to shift due to extra space, creating gaps in your teeth.
When you don't have enough room in your jaw for your teeth to fit normally, the teeth can bunch up, overlap and twist, sometimes getting pushed to the front or the back.
Underbite can occur when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth.
Crossbite can occur when the upper and lower jaws are both misaligned.
